More

Are you a Generalist Obstetrics & Gynaecology Consultant looking for a short term contact or sabbatical opportunity? I am currently working on a 6 month fixed term contract in beautiful Timaru starting January 2017 until July 2017 – the start of the New Zealand summer.

  • Due to the short term nature of the role and the requirement to work as a specialist, this position requires you to be eligible to register via Locum Tenens with Medical Council of New Zealand, meaning you should hold FRANZCOG (or equivalent, e.g. FRCOG with CCT). In addition, you must be willing to commence in January and commit for the full 6 months.
  • Competitive salary, reasonably priced housing and a variety of inexpensive leisure activities make living in this part of New Zealand a positive choice
  • Ideal locum opportunity

The Role

South Canterbury deals with approximately 500 - 600 Births per year on average.  South Canterbury serves a population of around 55,000 and has one of the oldest population demographics in NZ.

Timaru are looking for a true Generalist O&G who is comfortable dealing with the full range of clinical cases within Gynaecology who would enjoy a more large town/semi-rural location combined with a tight knit Hospital Team environment where everyone will know you well.

Currently the model of care here means this role would only deal to Secondary Obstetric Care needs (as Independent Midwives and the South Canterbury Obstetric Group are contracted separately to provide Primary Obstetric Care across South Canterbury).

You would join an existing team of two other O&G Specialists. They have NO registrars here but the service has one full-time House Officer allocated to the service.  This is usually a Second Year / FY2 or higher level House Officer (rather than a NZ First Year).

On Call demands are generally 1:3 weekdays On Call and 1:4 Weekends On Call commitment.

Location

Outside of working hours you’ll find Timaru and its surrounding districts offer an amazing array of outdoor pursuits for which New Zealand is famed. A long established and relatively prosperous rural centre, the city offers much comparable to any larger centre, yet without the associated hassles.

With its close proximity to lakes, mountains, forests, rivers and the sea, the region affords superior lifestyle and recreation opportunities. Rock climbing, hiking, bush walks, kayaking, boating, river rafting, mountain biking, four-wheeling, golfing and more are all available. There are also at least four ski fields within 1-2 hours drive of the city.

It has long been viewed as a friendly, safe place to raise a family. The district has excellent primary and secondary schools and a local polytechnic. It boasts the added advantage of being only two hours drive from the university cities of Dunedin and Christchurch, which also has an international airport. It further has a temperate, moderate climate with consistently high sunshine hours.
