Locum Consultant Paediatrician - Scottish Islands
An exciting opportunity is available for an experienced Consultant Paediatrician to work in a remote Scottish Island on a locum basis. Working in a hospital based Paediatrics Department you are required to provide cover from 19th December until the end of March (with the possibility for extension). You will be working Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, plus out of hours cover at the weekends (averaging 74 hours per week). You will work in a small district general hospital where the Paediatric medical service is provided by the Consultant Paediatrician and the Childrens' On Call team. There is a population of circa 6,000 people under the age of 19 in this region.
Children and young people with minor injuries and illnesses are treated in Primary care or are seen in A&E. Those requiring admission may be admitted to the hospital, and if necessary children may be transferred to or retrieved by a mainland unit. As the Consultant Paediatrician you will also provide medical care to newborns. There is a two incubator neonatal unit but seriously ill newborns are transferred to the mainland by the National Neonatal Transport Service. Midwives are trained in neonatal resuscitation and in examination of the newborn, but when on duty the Consultant Paediatrician attends high risk deliveries. When the Consultant Paediatrician is off duty high risk deliveries will be covered by midwives supported by the GP COD and a Consultant Anaesthetist.
To be considered for this locum you will be an experienced Consultant Paediatrician who is currently GMC registered with a licence to practise (and the right to work in the UK). Two professional references are required, together with a current police clearance check and occupational health check. Accommodation is available at very affordable rates and return travel costs to the hospital will be paid (within UK).
