Locum Consultant Gastroenterologist - Cornwall

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Locum Consultant Gastroenterologist to live and work in stunning Cornwall. This is on a fixed term contract which could lead to a permanent post if all are agreeable. The post-holder will join a cohesive and innovative team of consultants. All of which have a common goal of striving to provide the best care for the patients of Cornwall.

With a proven track record of improving their service, notable achievements during the past few years including:

  • A £3.4 million refurbished Endoscopy Unit
  • 2 JAG accredited Endoscopy Units
  • Full Bowel Cancer Screening Programme including age expansion and Bowel Scope Screening
  • Alcohol Liaison Team
  • Hep C service including community fibro scan and DAA nurse specialist
  • IBD Hub – providing a virtual IBD service including an IBD Helpline

The post will incorporate clinic and endoscopy as well as inpatient workloads. Gastroenterology on call and taking part in the general medical on call will be included. The team are supported by two Registrars and a team of junior doctors and Physicians Associates. Clinics are provided at the Royal Cornwall Hospital as well as community hospitals throughout Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Endoscopy takes place at two JAG accredited sites.

Being distanced from main cities, the Royal Cornwall Hospital has needed to develop and innovate health care leading to specialisation in many fields. This has created services that would not usually be associated within a main stream District General Hospital. This mind set is very much encouraged.

This is an exciting time for the department with a number of planned developments, in which it is hoped this post holder will play an active role. A specialist interest within the luminal or hepatology field would be actively encouraged to expand the specialities current service provision. For new consultants the job plan for this post will include 2.5 SPAs for the first year.

The department is actively involved in the delivery of the education programme of the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry [PCMD/University of Exeter Medical School and this post will be part of this provision.  Consideration will be given to a suitable applicant being awarded a senior honorary academic title with the PCMD. Subject to academic performance, a joint academic/clinical appointment might be possible in the future.

Applicants are required to be on the GMC register with a licence to practice. Being on the Specialist Register would be an advantage. Applications are welcomed from those unable to work full time for personal reasons or those wishing to job-share. The salary will follow the NHS pay scales.
