Kia Ora!  Do you have an interest in helping our client to develop a state of the art recovery programme for people having complex mental health needs?

We are seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist to participate in the on-going development of the recovery programme.  The facility is a 20 bed, free-standing residential facility located in the South Auckland area.  It serves men having complex and persistent psychiatric disability who are in need of a longer-term, supportive recovery programme in order to prepare for life in the community.  Over half our service users are of Maaori or Pacific ethnicity, and it is a priority to make our service approach responsive to their cultural needs.

The Recovery Centre is a part of the Mental Health Services at one of the largest hospitals in New Zealand. The area comprises a population of about 600,000, and is very culturally diverse.  It is one of the more urban areas of New Zealand - with easy access to all the entertainment, arts, and culture of downtown Auckland - but it also includes beautiful rural areas and beachlands.  The regional hospital has the distinction of being one of the busiest acute care facilities in Australasia, and we have just opened our new, state of the art psychiatric inpatient unit.

We are looking for a Consultant Psychiatrist who will work directly with individuals and their families/whaanau and also provide leadership within our multidisciplinary team to further develop and refine the programme.   Among our goals, we want to increase service user and family/Whaanau involvement in treatment planning, increase the specificity of diagnostic assessment, and expand the therapeutic offerings for our service users.  We are striving to make our programme strengths-based and able to facilitate individuals progress on their unique paths toward recovery.

Our Consultant Psychiatrist will be supported by a team consisting of nursing staff, a psychologist, a social worker, and an occupational therapist.  You would be a part of our psychiatric community of 70 physicians, and will have allocated time and opportunity to participate in weekly Grand Rounds, peer review, continuing medical education, and quality improvement, in support of your on-going professional development.

Applicants will need to become vocationally registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand and maintain a current Annual Practising Certificate.

If you are interested in this position, please apply online and attach a copy of your up to date CV so we can assess the level of assistance we can provide.

Accepted postgraduate Psychiatry specialist qualifications are recognised from the UK, Ireland, United States, Canada and Australasia.
