Specialist - Intensive Care

Dual Trained Specialists Welcome

Dunedin

Full time, Permanent, (and 1 year Locum positions considered)

As we develop our refurbished ICU at our main hospital in Dunedin, we have opportunities for Specialist Intensivists, including those with a dual training specialty interest in any of the following areas; Anaesthesia; Respiratory; Nephrology or Emergency Medicine.

The Hospital has just under 400 beds and provides general care for a population of approximately 180,000 and specialist care for approximately 350,000 people spread over the lower South Island of New Zealand. Our new critical care department will integrate ICU and the majority of HDU care on the same floor. The current 8 bed ICU admits around 720 patients per annum with a split of 2:1 acute vs elective. The current HDU has recently expanded to a total of eight beds housing a mixture of neurosurgical, general surgical and occasional medical HDU patients over two locations.  The new combined ICU-HDU complex, will see the care of patients in both ICU and HDU held by the Department of Critical Care Medicine with input from their hospital specialist teams as required. Although comparatively small to many of Australasia’s larger metropolitan ICUs, the case-mix is refreshingly diverse as a result of the location and large geographical catchment area: cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, major vascular surgery, trauma as well as general medical and surgical patients are catered for. Paediatric and burns patients re also stabilised and cared for in the ICU until safe transportation to other centres can be arranged if required.

Allocation of time for clinical duties and patient care is 50-70% of the working week with 50%-30% being allocated to your other specialty.  Intensive Care Unit (ICU) duties will be conducted as part of a shared roster with twelve other colleagues in intensive care medicine. Additionally, colleagues from emergency medicine and anaesthesia currently participate in the weekend aero-medical retrieval roster.  You would be expected to provide a mixture of cover for ICU, retrieval services, HDU and outreach services.

Depending upon the additional specialty you hold, such as respiratory, nephrology, emergency medicine or anaesthesia, we will negotiate the FTE you have with the other Service.  You will be expected to undertake a full share of the Intensive Care on-call roster with other members of the team.  Other duties include participation in teaching and supervision of junior doctors, nurses and medical students, team ward rounds, quality and safety activities, audit and clinical review meetings.   Additional payment is made for clinical duties outside of regular hours, in negotiation with the Southern District Health Board.

Outside of work, Dunedin is an excellent city to live in. It boasts a very competitive cost-of-living by Australasian standards, offers excellent schools, a relaxed lifestyle, world-famous wildlife on the Otago Peninsula, acclaimed museums and excellent access to outdoors pursuits such as skiing and snowboarding, fishing, surfing, kayaking, mountain biking and hiking. Many staff combine a hospital career with care of life-style blocks, pursuit of sporting or equestrian interests, viticulture or even farming. The city-centre is compact but has plenty of energy with more than 20,000 students adding to the local population in term-time.

To be considered for these roles, it is essential that you hold a Post Graduate qualification in Intensive Care Medicine, and Medicine/surgery (CICM or equivalent) allowing you to gain locum tenens or provisional vocational registration with the New Zealand Medical Council, it is desirable that you have additional training and fellowship.

About you
