Gen Med with Endocrinology Sub Specialty – Southland

Southland Hospital

  • Permanent, Full time 1.0 FTE
  • 0.6 Gen Med / 0.4 Endocrinology

About us

Southland

Our DHB covers the largest geographical catchment of all the DHB’s in New Zealand; Southland is our DHB’s Secondary Hospital proudly providing top-quality healthcare to a population of 105,000 in the lower South Island. This provides us with some unique challenges, but also ensures that there is an enormous scope for the variety in the work available to a talented professional.   Being at the bottom of the country you might expect us to have small, outdated facilities; but we are proud of our state-of-the-art hospital which was newly constructed in 2004.

About the role

We are looking for a General Medicine Physician, with a subspecialty interest in Endocrinology who wishes to work in a young and dynamic department of predominantly New Zealand trained Physicians.

We practice undifferentiated Internal Medicine here in Southland with a 38 bed medical ward and 6 bed critical care unit, covering the Southland, Queenstown and Te Anau regions. Sub-speciality support is provided predominantly by Dunedin Hospital, but we have a number of dual trained Physicians on site who work in both inpatient medicine and outpatient specialties. You would join a team of 7 physicians sharing equally in the acute roster, providing both inpatient and outpatient services. There is ample opportunity to participate in our robust departmental teaching programme, and we have close links with the University of Otago with a number of students that train here.  We are an accredited site for Basic and Advanced Physician training and provide an excellent training experience here in Internal Medicine. For physicians who are dual trained there is opportunity to accommodate and negotiate ongoing sub-speciality practice and we would be open to further discussions involving any specialty alongside Internal Medicine. This is truly an opportunity to practice General Medicine as it should be. We have a strong sense of team work here and have systems in place to ensure the inpatient workload is very manageable, especially in comparison to larger centres around New Zealand. The work life balance here is truly exceptional.

About you

An outstanding team player, you'll have the energy and drive to make a positive difference with both patients and colleagues alike. You will need to be someone who is an excellent communicator and values their patient’s culture and whanau and is enthusiastic about teaching and passing on your knowledge to junior members of staff. In addition to enjoying a diverse workload and an exceptional quality of life, you can look forward to a highly competitive pay rate and a culture where staff are included, valued and respected for their expertise. To be considered for this role you will need to be FRACP (or equivalent) holding, or be eligible to hold, a vocational registration with Medical Council of NZ. If you are an international candidate you can be considered for this role under the condition, you are eligible for vocational registration with the MCNZ.
