We’re seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist (General Adult) for join a team where a strong cultural emphasis underpins the services they deliver to their local community across the Tairawhiti region.

This role offers a rare opportunity to be involved in an initiative that is truly unique to New Zealand and Mental Health – in a beautiful part of the country.

Gisborne is the major city within Tairawhiti region and where this role will be based.

It’s not a large city (regionally 46,000 population, with approx. 30,000 living in the city itself), but it offers a fantastic lifestyle to people and families who love the outdoors and a relaxed living and pace of life.

The Role

This role provides general adult psychiatric services to the clients of Hauora Tairawhiti (the District Health Board) and is a key appointment for the service.

You will be a General Adult Psychiatrist (holding either FRANZCP or equivalent specialist qualifications, e.g. MRCPsych and CCT) with experience working at Consultant level. You will have broad experience and skills across Adult Psychiatry, along with a sound understanding of contemporary models of care; proven leadership skills and experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment; as well as a commitment and willingness to be involved in service development and quality improvement projects.

A subspecialty or special interest may be accommodated.

*We are also seeking a Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist for this team.

This is a role that will challenge stigma and discrimination, seeking positive outcomes for clients and their families (Whanau). If not from New Zealand, you may have experience in working in Cultural Psychiatry (or Transcultural Psychiatry), Indigenous Mental Health, or have a general interest in society and multiculturalism, and closing the gaps in health inequalities. 

While there is no requirement to be able to communicate in Te Reo (Maori language), you will have an open mind, a flexible approach and a willingness to learn and to take on new ideas and professional experiences. What’s on offer?

  • Total package circa NZ$180,000 - $280,000 pa, depending on level of experience
  • Includes base salary range NZ$158,141 - $230,000 pa (£82,700 - £120,300), depending on level of experience
  • Annual $16,000 Continuing Medical Education allowance & 10 days CME leave to attend conferences

The Location

Gisborne features a prevalent café culture and restaurants which serve locally sourced fresh produce, award winning wines and cheeses. Local schools are excellent and real estate is affordably priced – there is something ideal to suit your needs from apartments, townhouses, something more rural (lifestyle block) or close to Wainui Beach. Gisborne generally enjoys warm summers (up to mid-30s) and mild winters and is considered one of the sunniest places in New Zealand.

Locals enjoy easy access to a fantastic untouched natural environment, which lends itself to such outdoor pastimes as surfing, paddle boarding, fishing, sailing, swimming, mountain biking and hill walking etc. It’s also a popular holiday destination for other visiting Kiwis in the summertime, drawn to the hot summer weather, annual music festivals, vineyard tours and surfing competitions.

The local airport has daily connecting flights to both Auckland (1hr 5 min) and Wellington (1hr 10 min) International airports, meaning catching international flights in/out of NZ is really easy. Over the years, a number of international doctors and their families have successfully made their home here, relocating from the UK, Scandinavia, Europe and the USA.

Requirement for this role

Ideally you will hold FRANZCP and full Vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).

Alternatively, if not NZ trained or based, you will hold equivalent specialist qualifications from either UK (via CCT), Australia, Canada or USA that will enable Provisional Vocational (long term) registration or Locum Tenens (short term up to 12 months) registration. These are the specialist pathways for medical registration in NZ for Psychiatrists and we can assist with medical registration and work visa applications, if you are successfully appointed.

A further registration pathway may be applicable if you are an overseas trained Psychiatrist with at least 33 months (out of the last 48 months) specialist/ consultant level experience from a country considered to have a comparable health system by The Medical Council of New Zealand (click on the link to check if your experience is comparable).
