Where you’ll be working: Hamilton City, New Zealand

Who are we?

The Waikato ED is a major referral / Level 4 department seeing approximately 90,000 presentations per year with a 36% admission rate. It is accredited for 24 months of ACEM training, including the paediatric logbook requirements; 20% of presentations are paediatric. We have an active teaching program including streams for college exams; there is a simulation centre on campus. We have an active Ultrasound programme, with a DDU on staff. In addition to the 4 Waikato rural EDs, we act as a referral centre for major trauma, cardiology and several other tertiary services for the DHBs in the central North Island region, and Emergency Medicine is involved in leading the acute multidisciplinary management of these referrals. There is a full range of specialties in the hospital and we provide Emergency Care for all of them.

Our medical roster provides SMO cover 18 hours a day, 7 days a week, with a minimum of 3 SMO’s on each shift. You will enjoy working as part of a team, and enjoy supervising the junior staff. We also provide some support to the rural ED’s in the DHB; sessional appointments across more than one site are available.

The successful candidates must be either fellows of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM), or hold an equivalent specialist qualification in Emergency Medicine and be eligible to apply for vocational registration as an Emergency Physician in NZ.

We would love to hear from candidates who are interested in being involved in emergency medicine care, education and research, and keen to face the daily clinical challenges that come from working in our vibrant and busy ED with the following staff members:

• 28 FACEMS at a range of FTE

• 28 Emergency Medicine Registrars (23FTE)

• 5 Senior House Officers

• 9 Emergency Nurse Specialists

• 1 Nurse Practitioner, with more in training
