The Role

The Emergency Department is a Level 4 care provider, managing approximately 37,000 patients annually, with a full case-mix including major trauma.  Consultant cover is provided by 7 FACEM’s who are on the floor 15h a day 7 days a week.  Registrars who have worked in ED are eligible to apply for rotations in other specialties in Southland Hospital, including Anaesthesia, Paediatrics, and Medicine.

The service maintains a friendly and supportive working environment, with relaxed and collaborative relationships across the hospital system.

Successful applicants are expected to have a minimum of 2.5 years of postgraduate medical experience before starting, including at least 6 months ED experience.



Located in the lower South Island, Southland offers a wide range of recreational activities.  It is home to two of New Zealand’s national parks offering opportunities for tramping, internationally acclaimed fishing, hunting, climbing and a wide range of outdoor pursuits.  You have an abundance of choice for skiing with four ski fields within easy driving distance. 

Recognised as an ideal place to raise a family, Invercargill is a modern city offering access to outstanding leisure pursuits and a caring, safe community. The city also has superb facilities such as the brand new sports stadium and cycling velodrome, excellent schools, a local tertiary provider where free fees exist and the University of Otago in Dunedin.
