We are seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist (General Adult) for a permanent position in Kaitaia, in the Far North of New Zealand.

Living this far north, you’ll be someone who appreciates a rural or beach lifestyle and living and working in small communities.

  • Relaxed lifestyle in a rural setting
  • FRANZCP or equivalent specialist qualifications, e.g. MRCPsych with UK CCT
  • Strong interest and experience in rural psychiatry
  • Broad skills in general adult mental health
  • 2 hrs north of Whangarei & 4 hrs north of Auckland
  • Enjoy sea kayaking, scuba diving, sailing, paddleboarding, cycling, golfing
  • Beautiful unspoilt natural surroundings – white sandy beaches & native forest

This is a key appointment for the local community and an exciting opportunity to be involved in a growing service at the forefront of both primary and secondary care innovations. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team that contributes to an integrated model of service delivery in both outpatient and inpatient settings, which works in close partnership with other health, social and community sectors.

You will therefore have broad clinical experience and skills across General Adult Psychiatry along with a sound understanding of contemporary models of care; an interest in rural psychiatry; proven leadership skills and experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment; an interest in medical education and teaching, including providing supervision and education to medical students, registrars and other clinical staff; and of course, be involved in ongoing quality improvement programmes.

What’s on offer?

  • Total package circa NZ$180,000 - $300,000 pa depending on experience
  • Includes base salary range NZ$164,369 to $244,560 pa depending on experience; NZ$16,000 pa Continuing Medical Education Allowance + 10 days CME leave

The Region

The Northland region boasts some of the most scenic and exciting coastal areas of NZ in a subtropical climate. Its rich in Māori and European history, some of the oldest traces of Māori settlement can be found here and newcomers will experience a real – and unique - connection with the culture (Tikanga Māori ) and way of life.

With its high sunshine hours and fantastic natural environment, including white sandy beaches and native forests, it has the reputation of being one of the country’s premier tourist and lifestyle destinations. The Bay of Islands and Poor Knights Islands Reserves are known for world class scuba diving and sailing.  

Venturing further past Northland’s main city of Whangarei and heading to the Far North, you are well positioned to explore the natural beauty of this region;

  • Visit townships such as Kerikeri, Kawakawa, Kaikohe, Waitangi, Paihia and Opua;
  • Catch the ferry over to Russell in the Bay of Islands for a weekend away;
  • Go sandboarding at the famous Ninety Mile Beach;
  • Explore the ancient Kauri forest and meet the majestic Tane Mahuta;
  • Cycle the Twin Coast Cycle Trail,
  • Paddle a 40ft traditional war canoe (Waka Taua);
  • Venture right to the top of NZ at Cape Reinga

– all experiences you will only find in New Zealand.

Whangarei is a 2 hour drive away with a domestic airport which connects to Auckland International Airport (daily regular 35 minute flights to Auckland).

Medical Registration Requirement

Ideally, you will hold FRANZCP and full Vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).

If not NZ trained or based, you will hold equivalent specialist qualifications in psychiatry, e.g. MRCPsych or FRCPsych (with UK CCT) that will enable Provisional Vocational (long term) registration or Locum Tenens (short term up to 12 months) registration.  These are the specialist pathways for medical registration in NZ for Psychiatrists and we can assist with medical registration and work visa applications if you are successfully appointed.
