We are seeking Old Age Psychiatrist to work in a University Teaching Hospital  in Palmerston North - a provincial university city, 80 miles north of the capital of Wellington.

  • Permanent post
  • Modern teaching hospital with links to both Auckland and Otago Medical school
  • Major University City, centrally located, with easy access to Wellington
  • Huge range of sporting activities nearby to include golfing, skiing, bungee jumping, white water and scenic rafting.

The Role

The team provides a geriatric and psychogeriatric medical service to the elderly population of the district, with approximately 170,000 people in the area, of whom 30,000 are aged 65 years and over.

Acute medical care and rehabilitation is carried out across two sites, as well as outpatient clinics. Psychogeriatric beds are sited at the districts main secondary hospital, where the geriatric and psychiatric components of the service share the common resource and responsibility for patient care.

Psychogeriatric beds are sited at Palmerston North Hospital and are primarily the responsibility of the OAMH team with regular input from a designated consultant geriatrician. There is regular consultant medical support from a geriatrician who visits twice weekly and is available for advice at other times. The ward has a multidisciplinary team including an occupational therapist and a social worker and 15 beds. Professional Development and Peer Support occur from colleagues within the Elder Health team, as well as the consultant group working for the MHAS, and a well established monthly peer review meeting for Old Age Psychiatrists working across the lower North Island.

Outpatient clinics are held at Palmerston North Hospital and Horowhenua Health Centre in Levin. Other community duties involve undertaking domiciliary visits and rest home visits supported by a team of Community Psychiatric Nurses specialising in Old Age Psychiatry.

Interested candidates will be keen to be part of a multicultural workforce, and to work in a semi-rural community rich in culture and diversity.

The Location

Palmerston North is a major university city and is at the hub of key routes to the central North Island ski fields and river adventures. Only 90 minutes scenic drive from Wellington or 2 hours from Taupo makes Palmerston North a great base to explore the North Island from. Expect to spend a lot of time outside, because the area’s geography has inspired an exciting choice of mild, medium and wild adventures. Rafting, kayaking, horse trekking, mountain biking and rock climbing are just some of the things you can do.

Palmerston North, which is New Zealand’s 5th largest city,  is home to a thriving musical scene with many national and international acts touring through the town; as well as there being many local acts performing regularly. There are also theatres and a thriving wine industry. Whatever the occasion or mood, there is a café, bar or restaurant to cater to your tastes; from a shot of espresso to a meal that combines the best of local produce, and everything in between!
