We’re seeking a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist to join the team at Whakatāne Hospital in the stunning Bay of Plenty region.

Whakatāne Hospital is a comprehensive, well-equipped secondary hospital with modern facilities, serving a large catchment area with a population of approx. 50,000. The maternity service experiences around 700 births annually.

Their clients are from a diverse cultural background, with the majority being Maori (who represent 25% of the Bay of Plenty’s population). There is a wide pathology, which presents exciting opportunities for a dedicated specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, to make a genuine difference to the local community.

A Level 2 Special Care Baby Unit is located within the maternity facility. Patients requiring Tertiary care are referred to Waikato and/or Auckland Hospitals. Elective gynaecology services, including full Colposcopy services, are provided locally. They have well-resourced theatre facilities for acute and elective surgery, including minor and major open and minimal access procedures. 

For this role, therefore, you will have broad specialist experience in both Obstetrics and Gynaecology and a sound understanding of contemporary models of care.

In addition, you will also have proven leadership skills and experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment; an interest in medical education and teaching, including providing supervision and education to medical students, registrars and other clinical staff; and of course, a commitment to contributing to ongoing quality improvement programmes.

What’s on offer?

  • Total package ranges NZ$180,000 - $300,000 per annum, depending on experience
  • This includes: Base salary from NZ$164,369 to $244,560 pa, depending on level of experience; On call calculated on top of your base; Continuing Medical Education Allowance NZ$16,000 + 10 days CME leave pa.
  • Plus relocation assistance

The Location

Whakatāne (popn 35,500) and the neighbouring township of Ōhope offer a warm, relaxed lifestyle with over 50 km of coastline to enjoy and explore. Located just 1 hour’s drive from Tauranga City and 3.5 hours from Auckland, the region features some of the best beaches in NZ, such as Ōhope, Ōtarawairere, Pukehina and Ōhiwa – the warm and sunny climate makes it ideal for those who love the great outdoors and the beach life.

Locals enjoy easy access to a fantastic untouched natural environment, which lends itself to such outdoor pastimes as surfing, paddle boarding, fishing, sailing, swimming, mountain biking, hill walking, golf and more.

There is a domestic airport with daily flights to Auckland’s international airport, making connections to/from Whakatane very easy (45 minutes).

Requirements for this role

Ideally, you will hold FRANZCOG and full Vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).

Alternatively, if not NZ-trained, you will hold equivalent specialist qualifications from either the UK (via CCT), Australia (FRANZCOG), Canada (FRCSC) or the USA (American Board Certified) that will enable specialist registration in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with the Medical Council of New Zealand via the Provisional Vocational registration (long term) pathway or Locum Tenens (short term) registration pathway.

These are the two specialist pathways for Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in NZ and we can assist with medical registration and work visa applications, if appointed.
