Fresh, professional challenge - opportunity to take on a leadership role in the future and enjoy the laidback kiwi lifestyle.

We’re seeking a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist on a permanent basis to be based in Gisborne in the beautiful Tairawhiti region on the East Cape of the North Island.

Gisborne is a small city (regional population 46,000 with 30,000 in the city itself), but for those who love the outdoors, good clean air, and a beautiful natural environment, you won’t get a better location in the summer.

  • Relaxed coastal environment and a welcoming multicultural community;
  • FRANZCOG or equivalent specialist qualifications, e.g. FRCOG with CCT
  • Potential to take on a leadership role as they consider succession planning for Head of Department
  • Join a team of 3 other specialists;
  • On call commitment is one 24hr call per week and 1 weekend per month, covering Maternity, ED gynaecology patients if required, and gynaecology inpatients;
  • 700 births per annum, with most deliveries performed by Midwives;
  • Excellent schools and affordable housing;
  • Beautiful natural surroundings and marine life – white sandy beaches, native forest & birds, dolphins and orca.

For this role, you will have recent broad specialist experience in both Obstetrics and Gynaecology as this is very much a generalist role.

With approximately 700 births per annum and most deliveries performed by Midwives, the Obstetricians act as consultants on the maternity ward and run the antenatal clinic for high-risk women. You will therefore have clinical experience and expertise in the management of antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care of obstetric patients with moderate levels of complexity including medical complications, abnormal labours, operative deliveries, twin vaginal births, vaginal birth after caesarean and preferably breech vaginal birth.

Gynaecology services are located within the Hospitals Women’s Health Clinic, which services the Tairawhiti region. Appointments at the colposcopy and gynaecology clinics are arranged by a General Practitioner (GP) or via Hospital Referral. Operating room sessions are scheduled for gynaecologic surgery as indicated. You will therefore be expected to be comfortable performing (but not be limited to) the following procedures/exams: Pelvic exam; Endometrial biopsy; Colposcopy; LLETZ procedure; Hysteroscopy; Laparoscopy; Hysterectomy; and Pelvic organ prolapse repair.

Crucially, you will have the ability to make informed decisions in a high risk and rural environment; and be able to assess acute clinical situations and act decisively.

In addition, you will have a sound understanding of contemporary models of care; proven leadership skills and experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment; an interest in medical education and teaching; and of course, a commitment in contributing to ongoing quality improvement programmes.

You may find it useful to refer to RANZCOG Curriculum. A framework to guide the training and practice of specialist obstetricians and gynaecologists.” Which outlines the expected levels of clinical expertise, academic abilities and professional qualities required for this role. Your overall experience will be compared to these standards.

What’s on offer?

  • Total package ranges NZ$190,000 - $300,000 per annum, depending on experience
  • This includes: Base salary from NZ$161,304 to $240,000 pa (approx £82,000 to £122,000 pa), depending on level of experience; On call calculated on top of your base; Continuing Medical Education Allowance NZ$16,000 + 10 days CME leave pa.
  • Plus relocation assistance

The Location

Gisborne features a prevalent café culture and restaurants which serve locally sourced fresh produce and award-winning wines from local boutique vineyards. Local schools are excellent and real estate is affordably priced – there is something ideal to suit your needs from apartments, townhouses, something more rural (lifestyle block) or close to Wainui Beach. Gisborne enjoys warm summers (up to mid-30s) and mild winters and is considered one of the sunniest places in New Zealand. It’s also the first place to see the sunrise every morning.

Locals enjoy easy access to a fantastic untouched natural environment, which lends itself to such outdoor pastimes as surfing, paddle boarding, fishing, sailing, swimming, mountain biking and hill walking etc. It’s also a popular holiday destination for other visiting Kiwis in the summertime, drawn to the hot summer weather, annual music festivals, vineyard tours and surfing competitions.

The local airport has regular daily flights to Auckland and Wellington airports (1 hr flights), making international connections easy, as well as making other domestic destinations such as Queenstown and the Bay of Islands easily accessible

Additionally, you’re only a few hours drive from stunning Tauranga city and surrounding beaches in the Bay of Plenty, and the beautiful Hawke’s Bay region.

Over the years, many international medical specialists have also made their way to Gisborne for the lifestyle, particularly those from the UK and the USA. This means that along with the experienced New Zealand Specialists, there is a wealth of medical expertise across the multidisciplinary team.
