We are seeking a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine for a full-time permanent position in a regional base hospital in Whangarei, in stunning subtropical Northland.

Whangarei Hospital is the base hospital for the region providing secondary care services, supported by three small district hospitals in picturesque Bay of Islands (Kawakawa), Kaitaia and Dargaville.

  • Base salary NZ$152,000 - $216,500 per annnum, plus on call
  • Plus NZ$16,000 CME Allowance + 10 days CME leave per annum

The Medical Service here has radically changed the model of acute medicine and has undergone substantial expansion. It continues to develop and provide the best quality of care whilst still ensuring manageable workloads across the team. As a department, there is a team of 10 Physicians who share leadership of 5 teams comprising 10 Medical Registrars and 5 House Officers. This current recruitment round would enable the establishment of a 6th team. Facilities include a coronary care unit with 5 beds, two medical wards with 52 beds and a spacious outpatient facility.

The region itself has a diverse patient mix with high prevalence of COPD, Pulmonary Malignancy and Bronchiectasis. You will contribute to an active sleep service, pulmonary function laboratory, new one stop clinic for lung cancers and an endoscopy service for bronchoscopies. In addition, you will also participate in the Acute Medical ward cover and on call physician cover for Acute Medical call on a 1:10 basis.

While you will primarily be based at Whangarei hospital (inpatient services), you will also undertake outpatient services across all district hospital sites.

This role is an exciting addition to the team and you will therefore have the necessary broad experience and skills across Respiratory Medicine along with a sound understanding of contemporary models of care. In addition, you will also have proven leadership skills and experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment; an interest in medical education and teaching, including providing supervision and education to doctors in training and other clinical staff; and a commitment and willingness to be involved in to improving and developing services to meet the population need.

Whangarei has a busy domestic airport, as well as easy access transport links to Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city which is only a two hour drive away

Requirement

Given the permanent nature of this role, you should be eligible for provisional vocational registration with Medical Council of New Zealand (or already hold vocational registration with MCNZ). This is the specialist pathway for registration and we can assist with paperwork if you are successfully appointed. You can check the MCNZ website here to self-assess your eligibility for this pathway.

Alternatively, eligibility for Locum Tenens registration with Medical Council of New Zealand will also be viewed favourably. Locum Tenens is a short term specialist registration, valid for up to 12 months only, which takes only 30 days to process once submitted.
