Opportunity:
A great opportunity has arisen for a highly-skilled, enthusiastic, motivated, newly qualified or established Consultant to join a Gastroenterology team of 4 consultants in Lanarkshire at a District University Hospital.
Working as a Consultant in Gastroenterology - The department has its inpatient base on Ward 10. Acute gastroenterology patients admitted via AMRU are as far as possible transferred to Ward 10 for ongoing specialist care. Strong links are maintained with the other medical and surgical specialties at UHM well as with the Liver Unit, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and GI services at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary.
Outpatient clinics take place within the main Outpatient Department. The service is supported by 2 IBD nurse specialists and 1 liver nurse specialist who provide Biological Therapy for IBD, venesection and IV iron infusions in a dedicated Programmed Investigation Unit (PIU). There is significant scope to further develop nurse led pathways and this is being actively pursued.
Upper and lower GI endoscopy takes place within a dedicated Endoscopy Unit which has the full range of therapeutic facilities, including a recent upgrade to Olympus endoscopy equipment (290 series).
The consultant-provided endoscopy lists are supported by GI nurse-endoscopist sessions.Electronic reporting software (Unisoft) is used. The gastroenterologists plus a general surgeon provide emergency endoscopy on a dedicated morning slot five days per week.
Successful applicants will fully participate in delivering both the inpatient and outpatient gastroenterology services. It is anticipated that the successful candidates will develop a specialty interest to complement the existing services.
An interest in liver disease or clinical nutrition would be welcome, but equally, the post would be entirely suitable for an appointee with a strong interest in luminal gastroenterology.
