A new opportunity is available for a Consultant in Emergency Medicine to work at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

The hospital has 975 beds and is situated to the North-West of Aberdeen city and is on the teaching hospital site with the Medical School of the University of Aberdeen. With it being the principal adult acute hospital of the Grampian area, it provides a complete range of medical and surgical specialities to the approximately 250,000 population.  Aberdeen Royal Infirmary is the designated Adult and Paediatric Major Trauma Centre for the North of Scotland Trauma Network which in turn is a key component of the Scottish Trauma Network. It is also a major tertiary referral centre for a number of specialties in the North and North East of Scotland.

The Emergency Department at the hospital deals with all adult Emergency Medicine patients from the city of Aberdeen and surrounding areas and sees approximately 70,000 new patients per annum. In addition, the department is responsible for offshore shipping advice to Scottish coastal waters and receives many patients from the offshore industry. The hospital is the only one in Scotland with all acute adult specialities situated on-site and ideally suited to receive complex trauma cases. The department has around 25 Doctors including FY1, FY2, ACCS Specialty Trainees, GP Specialty Trainees, EM Specialty Trainees. There are also 3 Specialty Middle-grade Doctors with all Junior & Middle grades working a full shift rota with a 24-hour Middle-grade presence (ST4) in the departments.

If successful in this role you would have the opportunity to develop an interest in pre-hospital critical care and retrieval medicine as part of the commitment to contribute to the North of Scotland ScotSTAT base in Dyce. You would be expected to participate in the general work of both the Adult & Paediatric departments with on-call duties being shared with other Consultants. The current on-call rota equates to 1:7 on-call and 1:6 weekends.

Regional primary and secondary education facilities are excellent as evidenced by national league tables. In addition to Local Authority schools, there are excellent local fee-paying schools, one of which caters for girls only. There is also a new International School, which has a wide and diverse pupil and parent community.

The city of Aberdeen stands between the rivers Dee and Don on the North East coast of Scotland. Aberdeen is a beautiful and historic place with many architectural splendours constructed from the local granite which sparkles in the sunlight such that it has earned Aberdeen the name of the ‘Silver City’. There is a real sense of history as you walk through the older sections of the city and the large and busy harbour provides a vivid reminder of the area’s dependence on the sea for many centuries from fishing through to oil. Recognised as the prosperous ‘oil & gas capital’ of Europe, Aberdeen nevertheless retains its old-fashioned charm and character making it an attractive place in which to live.

To be eligible for this role you must have the following:

  • GMC registration with a license to practise.
  • On the Specialist register with the GMC (or be eligible for inclusion within 6 months of interview).
  • FRCEM or equivalent.
  • ALS/APLS/ATLS/ETC Provider or equivalent.
  • Able to demonstrate a high level of experience & competency in the full spectrum of adult and paediatric Emergency Medicine presentations pertinent to working in the UK.
  • This role will be subject to a police check.

This job is being offered on either a substantive or fixed term contract with part time being considered.
