I am currently recruiting a Consultant Haematologist to join a large tertiary teaching hospital in Hamilton, serving 750,000 people across the upper middle of New Zealand's North Island. This is a permanent appointment.

The Haematology service is part of the Regional Cancer Centre, incorporating a full mix of Haematology, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology and Palliative Care services. Inpatient care is provided at Waikato Hospital and outpatient services across the region in collaboration with neighbouring hospitals. The principal focus of the service is high-quality patient care with particular emphasis on multidisciplinary patient management. In addition to this the hospital has a strong commitment to staff education/development.

Services provided include haematologic malignancies (including acute leukaemia, high-grade lymphoma and autologous transplantation), general and obstetric haematology, haemostasis-thrombosis and laboratory haematology. The service works closely with the on-site Transfusion Medicine Specialist from the NZ Blood Service. Laboratory services include flow cytometry and cytogenetics. The service also runs an active clinical trials programme.

Current staffing is 7 haematologists including a laboratory haematopathologist, all working in collaboration with 5 haematology registrars, 4 nurse specialists, 6 medical oncologists and 5 radiation oncologists. The current haematologists have a broad range of skills and interests and candidates might therefore offer a range of different experience and skills to the department. However, clinical care, including of haematologic malignancies, will be an important part of the position.

Hamilton City

  • 4th largest city on New Zealand, just 90 minutes from Auckland
  • Bustling University city with restaurants, cafes and nightlife
  • Experience arts, culture and major sporting events here
  • Easy access to East and West Coastlines and top surfing beaches
  • Excellent educational options as well as affordable housing

As one of New Zealand’s fastest growing areas, one of the keys to this growth is its central location and easy access to other parts of the country. Having its own international airport makes it easy to catch connecting international flights to Australia, the UK and beyond. Auckland City is only a 90 minute drive away and both the West Coast and East Coast beaches are within easy reach, including Mount Maunganui (voted New Zealand’s best beach in 2015), the stunning Coromandel Peninsula, and if you love surfing, Raglan is the place to be with its rugged coastline and some of the best surf breaks NZ has to offer.

There’s a real arts and cultural scene here too, along with an array of sporting events. As a university city, there is a diverse mix of arts and culture, as well as an array of sporting activities. The population (urban 150,000, regional 400,000) is diverse, with many cultures represented and celebrated here. Events and festivals throughout the year include Diwali, Matariki (Maori New Year), Garden shows, regular Farmers Markets, Theatre shows and music festivals, major sporting events and tournaments (e.g. Seddon Park for the cricket for local, national and international matches). There is an array of restaurants and cafes featuring locally sourced products, a vibrant nightlife, vineyards, and wide open spaces for you to enjoy the great outdoors. There is a wide variety of schooling options, both public and private, as well as at tertiary level. Housing is very affordable whether you like the idea of an urban apartment, a townhouse with a garden, or a sprawling lifestyle block just outside of the city.

Why NZ?

New Zealand is becoming more and more a location of choice for those who previously considered Australia as the most desirable location down under. Its rapid growth compared to other developed countries has recently been referred to as a “rock star economy” and it was voted the best place in world to raise a family by the 2014 HSBC Expat Explorer Survey, with the report describing it as “an ideal destination to raise active, outdoorsy and healthy children.”

Medical professionals are well-remunerated and enjoy good working conditions and an excellent work life balance in New Zealand.

There’s never been a better time to look more closely at what NZ has to offer:
