We are seeking a passionate and committed Haematologist to join a dynamic, progressive and multidisciplinary department at Waikato Hospital, the largest tertiary hospital in New Zealand.

The Team and Service

Waikato Hospital is a large tertiary hospital in Hamilton, serving 750,000 people across the upper middle of New Zealand’s North Island.

The Haematology service is part of the Regional Cancer Centre, incorporating a full mix of Haematology, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology and Palliative Care services. Inpatient care is provided at Waikato Hospital and outpatient services across the region in collaboration with neighbouring hospitals. The principal focus of the service is high-quality patient care with particular emphasis on multidisciplinary patient management. In addition to this they have a strong commitment to staff education/development.

Services provided include haematologic malignancies (including acute leukaemia, high-grade lymphoma and autologous transplantation), general and obstetric haematology, haemostasis-thrombosis and laboratory haematology. They work closely with the on-site Transfusion Medicine Specialist from the NZ Blood Service. Laboratory services include flow cytometry and cytogenetics. The service also runs an active clinical trials programme.

Current staffing is 7 haematologists including a laboratory haematopathologist, all working in collaboration with 6 haematology registrars and 4 nurse specialists. The team of haematologists have a broad range of skills and interests and candidates might therefore offer a range of different experience and skills to the department. However, clinical care, including of haematologic malignancies, will be an important part of the position.

The Location

The Waikato region is the fourth largest in area & population in New Zealand. The region boasts lush, green hills, with exceptional surfing opportunities on the west coast and glorious beaches on the east coast. Surfers come from all over the world to experience nearby Manu Bay's famous left-hand break and the Raglan Surf Beach lifestyle is appealing to all. Ski fields, fresh and saltwater fishing grounds are easily reachable as are many beaches and holiday spots. New Zealand’s largest city is an easy 90 minute freeway drive away making this a great location with many possibilities.
