We're seeking a Consultant Geriatrician/General Physician for the District General Hospital in Tauranga.

The Service

The model of acute medical care in Tauranga has changed significantly over the last few years, with the aim of always developing and improving the older patient journey in order to provide the best quality care.  The department maintains strong links with both Emergency Medicine and Acute Medicine, so you will be expected to participate in the acute medicine roster.

They also provide specialist Stroke, Orthogeriatric, Movement Disorder and Rehabilitation services.

Also important is the team and making sure workloads are manageable and individuals have the time and space to develop speciality services.

The Location

Tauranga is now the 5th largest city in New Zealand with an urban population of 130,000 (regionally 230,000) and is only a 2.5 hour drive south of Auckland.

It has always been a premier destination, but with the strong NZ economy and a buoyant housing market, Tauranga is now the fastest growing city in New Zealand. Businesses are moving their bases here, the Port of Tauranga is a major employer and the largest port in NZ. The upcoming Cruise Ship season is expected to contribute approx. $54million into the Bay of Plenty’s economy and over the 6 months 114 ships will stop off in Tauranga. In 2019, the University of Waikato will open its new tertiary campus in the city centre.

Tauranga, and in particular the suburb of Mount Maunganui, are well known for many things - the mountain (Mauao), the sunshine, the café and restaurant scene, the surfing, the white sandy beaches and natural salt water hotpools, the local markets with fresh produce, the safe and family-friendly lifestyle with excellent schools, and high-end designed real estate.

There are regular daily flights from Tauranga to Auckland (35 minutes!), making international flight connections easy.

Requirement for this role

For this role, you will have broad specialist experience in the health of older people/ care of the elderly. In addition, you will have a sound understanding of contemporary models of care and will be an innovative thinker with ideas to contribute to the further development of the service.

You will also have proven leadership skills and experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment; an interest in medical education and teaching, including providing supervision and education to medical students, registrars and other clinical staff; and of course, a commitment in contributing to ongoing quality improvement programmes.

What’s on offer?

  • Total package value NZ$190,000 - $280,000 per annum, depending on experience
  • Base salary NZ$161,304 - $240,000 pa (approx £84,000 - £125,000 pa)
  • On Call calculated on top of your base
  • Continuing Medical Education Allowance NZ$16,000 per annum
  • Plus 10 days dedicated CME leave each year
  • Relocation assistance

Medical Registration

Ideally you will hold FRACP and full Vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).

Alternatively, if not NZ trained or based, you will hold equivalent specialist qualifications from either the UK (via CCT), Ireland (via CCT), Australia, Canada or USA that will enable Provisional Vocational (long term) registration or Locum Tenens (short term up to 12 months) registration. These are the specialist pathways for medical registration in NZ for Physicians.

A further registration pathway may be applicable if you are an overseas trained Physician with at least 33 months (out of the last 48 months) specialist/ consultant level experience from a country considered to have a comparable health system by the MCNZ. English language requirements may be applicable.
