The Medical Service provides specialist services across the Bay of Plenty district, which incorporates two hospital sites in Tauranga and Whakatāne (1 hour drive down the coast), delivering to a total population of approx 260,000.
The service continues to expand to meet the needs of the local community. There is opportunity within the service to develop your special interest, e.g. Emergency/ Acute care of older people, Parkinson Disease or to work alongside ither specialist teams such as cardiology and general surgical services. Experience or an interest in Rehabilitation Medicine will also be considered.
You will work with the team to deliver and develop further its district-wide service, implementing new and responsive solutions that meets the needs of the community accessing Health of Older People service across these two sites, and participate in delivery of both planned (elective) and unplanned (acute) care in both older persons health and as part of the general medical service.
In addition, you will be an individual who has the skills to foster a learning culture across undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff, with the support of the Bay Of Plenty Clinical School and the University of Auckland.
For this role, you will have broad specialist experience in both Geriatric Medicine and General Internal Medicine, and a sound understanding of contemporary models of care, combined with experience of working in a culturally diverse setting.
You will also have proven leadership skills and experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment; an interest in medical education and teaching, including providing supervision and education to medical students, registrars and other clinical staff; and of course, a commitment to ongoing quality improvement programmes.

What’s on offer?
- Total package ranges NZ$180,000 - $300,000 per annum, depending on experience
- This includes: Base salary from NZ$164,369 to $244,560 pa, depending on level of experience; On call calculated on top of your base; Continuing Medical Education Allowance NZ$16,000 + 10 days CME leave pa.

The Location
Tauranga is now the 5th largest city in New Zealand with an urban population of 151,300 (regionally 255,102) and is only a 2.5 hour drive south of Auckland. It has always been a premier destination, but with the strong NZ economy and a buoyant housing market, Tauranga is now the fastest growing city in New Zealand.

Medical Registration
Ideally, you will hold FRACP and full Vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).
If you are an overseas specialist physician, you will hold equivalent specialist qualifications from either Australia (FRACP), the UK (MRCP/FRCP and CCT), Ireland (FRCPI and CCT), Canada (FRCPC) or USA (American Board Certification) that will enable Provisional Vocational (long term) registration or Locum Tenens (short term up to 12 months) registration.
Locum Tenens and Provisional Vocational registration are the two pathways to medical registration in NZ for Specialist Physicians and we can assist with your medical registration and visa, if successfully appointed.
