We’re seeking a Consultant General Surgeon to join the team in Whanganui, on the West Coast of the North Island.

Whanganui District Health Board is located on the West coast of New Zealand's North Island with a wide range of services including general surgery, orthopaedics, ENT, obstetrics and gynaecology, emergency medicine, general medicine, ophthalmology, dentistry and psychiatry. They provide a six-bed critical care unit with tertiary support from Wellington Hospital.
Tertiary services such as cardio-thoracics, neurosurgery, paediatric surgery and cardiology are provided for their patients in Wellington.
For this role, you will have broad specialist experience in General Surgery. You will have a sound understanding of contemporary models of care and experience of working in a culturally diverse setting.
In addition, you will have experience of taking an innovative approach to the development of services, through an integrated service model of care. You will have proven leadership skills and experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment; an interest in medical education and teaching, including providing supervision and education to medical students, registrars and other clinical staff; and of course, a commitment to ongoing quality improvement programmes.
What’s on offer?
- Total package ranges NZ$180,000 - $300,000 per annum, depending on experience
- This includes: Base salary from NZ$164,369 to $244,560 pa, depending on level of experience; On call calculated on top of your base; Continuing Medical Education Allowance NZ$16,000 + 10 days CME leave pa.

Whanganui (population: urban 43,000, regional 62,000) has all the facilities that you would expect of a small city, it is also compact and easy to navigate. If you prefer to live a semi-rural relaxed lifestyle, it’s a great place for families with a real sense of community and hospitality with Farmers Markets, little cafes and restaurants, as well as plenty of sporting activities if you want to get involved.
You’re also within easy driving distance of premier ski resorts at Turoa and Whakapapa to the north west, the lush Hawke’s Bay wine region to the east, clean and quiet unspoilt beaches (Surf Highway 45, Castlecliff, Kai Iwi) up and down the West Coast, and of course, to the South is NZ’s capital city of Wellington (2.5 hour drive).
Living here is very affordable, with quality housing and a reputation for its excellent primary and secondary education facilities, there is a lot to offer families of all ages. And the commute to work is circa 5-10 minutes from anywhere in the city – it’s a nice way of life if you prefer not to be in a city and to be close to the ocean.
There are daily flights from Whanganui to Auckland (1 hr) and Wellington, making international flight connections easy.

Ideally, you will hold FRACS and full Vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).
If you are an overseas specialist physician, you will hold equivalent specialist qualifications from either Australia (FRACS), the UK (FRCS via CCT), South Africa (FCS(SA)), Ireland (FRCSI via CCST), Canada (FRCPSC) or USA (American Board Certification) that will enable Provisional Vocational (long term) registration or Locum Tenens (short term) registration.
These are the two specialist pathways for medical registration in NZ for surgeons and we can assist with medical registration and facilitate the work visa, if successfully appointed.

If successfully appointed - as part of the medical registration process - you will be required to provide a copy of your surgical logbook which must include from the time of your postgraduate training to the current day.
