We’re seeking a Consultant General Internal Medicine to join the team at Hawke’s Bay Hospital in Hastings. Live the gourmet lifestyle in the sunny Hawke’s Bay on the East Coast of the North Island.

You will be based in a large secondary level, 400 bed accredited public hospital providing acute and elective care for a region of over 162,000 people. It is one of the largest provincial hospitals in New Zealand. 

The hospital is modern with a full range of surgical, medical, oncology and radiological services. In addition, outreach services are provided at rural and community based facilities across the region.

The General Medicine Department looks after more than 8,000 admissions per year, across 3 medical wards and a 20 bed acute assessment unit. We are looking for a physician with skills in general medicine to join one of the ward-based teams in the general medical service. The focus will be ward based care of acute presentations, but time for outpatient clinics and service development/innovation will be included.

Subspecialty work can be accommodated as part of the role.

For this role, you will have broad specialist experience in general internal medicine and a sound understanding of contemporary models of care. Your broad range of skills, knowledge and experience will mean that you will be comfortable dealing with the care of undifferentiated presentations to acute medicine.

You will also have proven leadership skills and experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment; an interest in medical education and teaching, including providing supervision and education to registrars, medical students and other clinical staff; and of course, a commitment to contributing to ongoing service development.

What’s on offer?

  • Total package ranges NZ$190,000 - $300,000 per annum, depending on experience
  • This includes: Base salary from NZ$164,369 to $244,560 pa, depending on level of experience; on call calculated on top of your base; Continuing Medical Education Allowance NZ$16,000 + 10 days CME leave pa.

The Hawke’s Bay region is set on the beautiful East Coast of the North Island. Live in Hastings (popn 80,000) or the art-deco city of Napier (63,000) and enjoy all the lifestyle benefits that this region brings.

Home to an array of gourmet restaurants, bars and cafes; the beautiful surrounding scenery featuring of Te Mata Peak and Waimarama Beach; the fantastic bike trails down to Cape Kidnappers, not to mention the premier golf courses with views across the Pacific Ocean; as well as the music, wine and food festivals; and urban farmer’s markets – there is something here to suit everyone.

The climate with its high sunshine hours, lends itself beautifully to winemaking. The vineyards are famous for their red, white and specialty wines to complement any dish.

The local airport in Hastings features regular daily 1-hour flights to Auckland and Wellington International Airports, making connections to/from NZ very easy.

Requirements for this role

Ideally, you will hold FRACP and full Vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).

If you are an overseas specialist physician, you will hold equivalent specialist qualifications from either Australia (FRACP), the UK (MRCP/FRCP via CCT), Ireland (FRCPI via CCT), Canada (FRCPC) or USA (American Board Certification) that will enable Provisional Vocational (long term) registration or Locum Tenens (short term) registration.

These are the specialist pathways for medical registration in NZ for physicians and we can assist with medical registration and facilitate the work visa, if successfully appointed.
