We’re seeking a Consultant Gastroenterologist to join the team in the sunny Hawke's Bay. Live the gourmet lifestyle on the east coast of the North Island - it's the ideal setting for foodies and fine wine enthusiasts!

You will be based in a large secondary level, 400 bed accredited public hospital providing acute and elective care for a region of over 162,000 people. It is one of the largest provincial hospitals in New Zealand.

The hospital is modern with a full range of surgical, medical, oncology and radiological services. In addition, outreach services are provided at rural and community based facilities across the region in Wairoa and Waipukurau.

Ruakopito is our client’s newly built start-of-the-art facility, situated on the hospital campus in Hastings houses all their patient-based gastroenterology services in one place; providing 3 procedure rooms, patient recovery, resource and administration areas, clinic spaces and meeting rooms. This dedicated space supports the delivery of services as part of the national Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.

The team currently comprises three gastroenterologists, and a team of nurses lead by two registered nurses with extensive gastroenterology outpatient, and endoscopy experience. We have a very active and involved group of medical and surgical specialists here and a very collegial atmosphere exists. The radiology facilities are excellent.

For this role, you will have broad specialist experience in Gastroenterology and a sound understanding of contemporary models of care. In addition, you will be an innovative thinker with ideas to contribute to the further development of the service. You will have proven skills and experience in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.

An ability to perform ERCP would be desirable but not essential and experience in deploying oesophageal, duodenal and colonic stents is highly desirable as currently only one of the Gastroenterologists provides this expertise. If necessary training in these techniques will be arranged.

You will have proven leadership skills and experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment; and an interest in medical education and teaching, including providing supervision and education to medical students, registrars and other clinical staff.

You will also enjoy working in a multicultural workforce, and being based in a friendly coastal community.

What’s on offer?

  • Total package ranges NZ$190,000 - $300,000 per annum, depending on experience
  • This includes: Base salary from NZ$164,369 to $244,560 pa, depending on level of experience; on call calculated on top of your base; Continuing Medical Education Allowance NZ$16,000 + 10 days CME leave pa.

The Hawke’s Bay region is set on the beautiful East Coast of the North Island. Live in Hastings (popn 80,000) or the art-deco city of Napier (63,000) and enjoy all the lifestyle benefits that this region brings.

Home to an array of gourmet restaurants, bars and cafes; the beautiful surrounding scenery featuring of Te Mata Peak and Waimarama Beach; the fantastic bike trails down to Cape Kidnappers, not to mention the premier golf courses with views across the Pacific Ocean; as well as the music, wine and food festivals; and urban farmer’s markets – there is something here to suit everyone.

The climate with its high sunshine hours, lends itself beautifully to winemaking. The vineyards are famous for their red, white and specialty wines to complement any dish.

The local airport in Hastings features regular daily 1-hour flights to Auckland and Wellington International Airports, making connections to/from NZ very easy.

Medical Registration

Ideally, you will hold FRACP and full Vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).

If you are an overseas Specialist Gastroenterologist, you will hold equivalent specialist qualifications from either Australia (FRACP), the UK (via CCT), Ireland (via CCT), Canada (FRCPC) or USA (Board certification ABIM) that will enable Provisional Vocational (long term) registration or Locum Tenens (short term up to 12 months) registration.

These are the two pathways for specialist physicians in NZ and we can assist with medical registration and the work visa, if successfully appointed
