We are seeking a passionate, committed Consultant Endocrinologist / Diabetes Specialist to join the dynamic, progressive department at Waikato Hospital, the largest tertiary hospital in New Zealand.
The broad focus on patient care, research and education offers an excellent career opportunity. This role is a combination of a 0.45 FTE vacancy in Diabetes and a 0.45 FTE vacancy in Endocrinology.
0.45FTE Diabetes
You will be working in a team of senior clinicians, including an endocrinologist, nurse practitioner, psychologist, and dietitian who provide care to patients with diabetes in partnership with general practice, and at times within the secondary care environment. At Waikato Hospital there are currently seven part time clinicians working in the service making a total of 2.55 FTE. The service includes Adult Weight Management services, Diabetes in Pregnancy services, Youth and Young Adults services and an Insulin Pump Team in addition to an inpatient team.
0.45FTE Endocrinology
You will be working in a team of four other part time senior clinicians, supported by 1.55 FTE of registered nurses. The department is accredited for training two advanced trainees. They provide full-day dynamic testing, consultant ward rounds plus daily inpatient consults, Radiology and MDM conferences and a weekly journal club. The service supports a population of approximately 890,000 people in Waikato DHB and the larger tertiary catchment including BoP, Taranki and Tairawhiti.
The location
Waikato is one of New Zealand’s fastest growing areas, it is currently the 4th largest city in the country. Key to this growth is its central location and easy access to other parts of NZ. Auckland City is only a 90 minute drive away and both the west coast and east coast beaches are within easy reach, including Mount Maunganui (voted New Zealand’s best beach in 2017), the stunning Coromandel Peninsula, and Raglan Beach, with its rugged coastline and some of the best surf breaks NZ has to offer.
As a university city, there is a diverse mix of arts and culture, as well as an array of sporting activities. The population (Hamilton city 200,000, Waikato region 390,000) is diverse, with many cultures represented and celebrated here. Events and festivals throughout the year include Diwali, Matariki (Maori New Year), Garden shows, regular Farmers Markets, Theatre shows and music festivals, major sporting events and tournaments.

Total package circa NZ$180,000 - $300,000 pa, depending on level of experience
