The Region

Northland boasts some of the most scenic and exciting coastal areas of NZ in a subtropical climate. With a regional population of approx 164,000, it spans from just north of Auckland right up to the top in Cape Reinga.

With its high sunshine hours and stunning natural environment, including white sandy beaches and native forests, it has the reputation of being one of the country’s premier tourist and lifestyle destinations, and is a popular holiday choice for both New Zealanders and international visitors.

It’s a region rich in Māori and European history, some of the oldest traces of Māori settlement can be found here. Today, 35% of the Northland population identify as Māori, so newcomers will experience a real connection with the Tikanga (culture) and way of life here, providing valuable exposure and rewarding experiences both professionally and socially.

Popular water recreation areas include the Bay of Islands and Poor Knights Islands Reserves for world class scuba diving (PADI), sailing and fishing. You can enjoy al fresco dining and wander around the Growers Market on a Saturday morning full of fresh, locally-sourced produce. Or go paddle boarding (SUP), cycling, golfing, hiking, mountain biking and so much more.

Whangarei has easy access transport links to Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, which is only a two hour drive away. There is also a busy domestic airport, with numerous daily flights to Auckland (35 minutes) that connect to the International Airport.

A further registration pathway may be applicable if you are an overseas trained Cardiologist with at least 33 months (out of the last 48 months) specialist/ consultant level experience from a country considered to have a comparable health system by the MCNZ. English language requirements may be applicable.

Please visit the MCNZ website for details on the medical registration requirements.

From 1st November 2017, all relevant qualifications must now be verified by ECFMG using the EPIC system on behalf of the Medical Council of New Zealand.  If you are committed to working in New Zealand, we recommend starting this process off as soon as possible if you hold qualifications from outside NZ. Candidates can log on to EPIC and complete this step online very easily. EPIC verifies your identity and your qualifications.
