The Role

You will provide safe, high quality anaesthetic clinical services and assist in the provision of direction, service planning and clinical governance to the Anaesthetic Team, Pre-Admission Clinic and the High Dependency Unit. Oversight of unit staff including GP Anaesthetists will also be a part of the role.  You will be responsible for the provision of the full range of anaesthetic services including general and regional anaesthesia as well as obstetric services including epidural/spinal anaesthesia. (750 births between Gladstone Hospital and Mater Private Gladstone). You will conduct acute ward rounds for high acuity patients, pre-anaesthetic assessment clinics and provide anaesthesia for endoscopy, general surgery, orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynaecology, dental and investigative services.  In addition to providing critical care input to HDU patients while on-call for anaesthesia and HDU in consultation with the admitting Specialists, you will organise and support transfer of patients by liaising with Royal Flying Doctors Service /Retrieval team.

You will also have the opportunity to carry out some work in Rockhampton, a larger referral hospital 100km north of Gladstone. This will allow you to attend peer review, education and anaesthetic meetings with the Rockhampton Anaesthetic Department.

The Hospital

Gladstone Hospital is a 70 bed hospital and offers a range of general and specialist inpatient and outpatient services including emergency, general medicine and surgery, basic orthopaedic, clinical investigation, obstetrics, maternity, gynaecology, high dependency and coronary care, palliative care, medical imaging, pathology and paediatrics. Additional services include Mental Health, Alcohol and other Drugs Service, oral health, physiotherapy, dietetics, speech pathology and outreach/community based facilities, as well as a Primary Health Care Centre located at Boyne Valley. A private Mater Misericordiae Hospital is adjacent to the Gladstone Hospital and operates within a co-location agreement.

Gladstone Hospital has approximately 282 full time equivalent staff delivering services across acute, community and primary care. Approximately 500 babies are born at the Gladstone Hospital each year and approximately 1600 surgical cases performed in the two operating theatres. There is a 29 bed mixed General Surgical and Medical Ward and a four bed High Dependency Unit where patients may be held pending retrieval, or for close observation not possible on the wards. Additional beds are available for paediatrics. The hospital has a busy surgical outpatient clinic reviewing a wide variety of surgical conditions.

The Staff Specialist positions at the Gladstone Hospital are supported by a team of Senior and Junior Medical Officers.  Consultants are supported clinically in both the ward and clinics by Registrar and RMO cover 24/7. Administrative support for the ward and the Department is also provided. In addition to their own junior medical staff the Staff Specialist positions at the Gladstone Hospital are supported by teams of Senior Medical Officers and junior medical officer positions in the emergency department and other disciplines.

The Area

Gladstone is a dynamic, modern city basking in a sub-tropical climate with islands, waterways and beaches providing year-round boating, fishing, swimming and surfing.  A wide variety of restaurants and eateries cater to all tastes - from Australian tucker to Gladstone's famous mud crab and fresh seafood.

The region surrounding Gladstone is a diverse and fascinating one with an adventurous outdoor flavour complementing the busy, urban environment. The region includes beachside towns, secluded beaches and scenic National Parks.  The area boasts an average high of 32 degrees in the Summer with a low of 13 degrees in winter which makes it highly liveable.  You can enjoy coastal living in the area - opportunities for boating, island hopping, exploring are bountiful.  Additionally, you can enjoy the Southern Great Barrier Reef - sailing, snorkelling and diving. Gladstone offers access to Heron Island, Wilson Island and uninhabited coral cays. A large charter boat fleet operates from the world class Marina.

Gladstone's Tondoon Botanic Gardens are one of Australia's few totally native botanic gardens. The display areas specialise in the plants of the surrounding and Tropical North Queensland regions. The Gladstone Entertainment Centre, at the heart of the 'Library Square', forms the focal point of the city's cultural activities. The Gladstone Regional Art Gallery and Museum is a colonial Georgian structure which houses three exhibition areas and hosts the Region's annual Rio Tinto Martin Hanson Art Awards which draws entrants from all over Queensland.
