Consultant Anaesthetist – Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland

A Consultant Anaesthetist position is available working at the new Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary, located in the south of Scotland to join an established team of 13 full time consultants. Head Medical are working exclusively on the current vacancies and are delighted to be able to represent this department which also offers a new combined Critical Care Unit. The Anaesthetic Department at the newly built hospital, which opened in December 2017, offer fantastic facilities. The main theatre complex consists of 8 operating theatres and 4 endoscopy/minor procedure rooms, the operating theatres include a dedicated obstetric theatre, 3 UCV (laminar flow) theatres, 2 integrated (laparoscopic theatres) and 1 theatre designed with the capability to install fixed radiological equipment. Each theatre has an anaesthetic room.

The Critical Care area is located adjacent to the operating theatres and above the emergency department. There is a 16 bed combined Intensive Care and High Dependency Unit with 16 individual rooms (some with ensuite), 1 with isolation facilities and 1 procedure room suitable for temporary pacemaker insertion etc. There is also a seminar room and handover rooms, a relatives area with overnight rooms and adjacent on call bedrooms. All rooms have been designed with electrochromic glass fronts and large windows to maximise natural light and for the benefit of both staff and patients.

The Consultant post will comprise 10 Programmed Activities, with a split of 9:1 between Direct Clinical Care PAs and Supporting Professional Activities as standard, but the balance can be agreed with the successful person. A minimum of 1 SPA will reflect activities such as appraisal, personal audit, professional development (out with study leave) and teaching. The department currently has a flexible approach to clinical sessions and it would be hoped that the new Consultant would continue to work in this way. You will participate in a 1:6 on call rota (2 consultants) with compensatory time off and no clinical commitments on the day after  ‘1st on call consultant’ duties. Regular educational and research meetings are held locally, and the department participates in the weekly Edinburgh Royal Infirmary Critical Care Journal Club via video conferencing.

The Department is accredited for basic level training in Intensive Care Medicine and is heavily involved in Critical Care and Resuscitation teaching with ALERT, IMPACT, APLS, ALS, SCOTTIE courses all being run from the well-equipped Education and Resuscitation Training Centre at DGRI.

You will have full GMC registration with a license to practise and you will be on the Specialist Register for Anaesthesia or eligible for entry within 6 months. You will be part of an on-call rota and require having competency and experience across all anaesthesia sub-specialties, particularly Critical Care, Obstetrics and Paediatrics. The department are happy to accommodate most sub specialist interests but are particularly interested in those with additional training and/or qualifications in Chronic Pain or Intensive Care. There can be flexibility around sessions, and daytime critical care sessions may be accommodated. Each Consultant will have a desk and PC in the department offices, which are located adjacent to the Critical Care and Operating theatres, also with excellent views over the surrounding countryside.

This is a great opportunity to join a well-equipped department, and work in a beautiful location in Scotland. There are huge opportunities to develop your special interests and be part of the wider Scottish network. Dumfries is a lovely town, ideally located for outdoor activities and a fabulous place for families. The crime rates are low, schools are excellent, and the housing is affordable. The area is easily linked to the cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh or travel south into the north of England.
