Mackay Hospital has just recently undergone an AUD$408million investment project, expanding services significantly and increasing the bed capacity from 180 to 318 beds. The re-development includes a new emergency department, outpatients department, delivery suites and special care nursery, intensive care unit and coronary care unit, day surgery and operating theatre suite, inpatient surgical and medical wards, renal support services, dental, allied health and mental health facilities.
It is a digital hospital, equipped with leading edge technology to assist staff to provide the highest level of care and comfort to our patients. It is the first regional hospital in Queensland to have a complete, integrated, electronic medical record. In addition, a $1.5 million MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scanner allows for more medical imaging on-site.
The hospital provides services to a population of approximately 160,000 with 40,000 ED admissions annually. It is the main base hospital for the region, supporting 7 smaller facilities. It provides specialist services in obstetrics, gynaecology, paediatrics, orthopaedics, psychiatry, urology and oncology and many other specialty areas. New services implemented in 2017 included ENT and a Step Up Step Down mental health service.
The department and role
The Mackay Base Hospital Orthopaedic Department has seven consultants (four full time and three part time). All are generalists with special interests in sub-speciality areas such as hip and knee, shoulder, paediatrics or trauma. The department undertakes 1800 to 2000 surgeries annually. There are seven registrar positions including one training registrar. The department prides itself on a collaborative approach exemplifying mutual respect for one another.
You will help deliver a high quality, generalist specialist service with the Department of Orthopaedics at Mackay Hospital, providing, supervising and being responsible for the provision of clinical duties within the Department of Orthopaedics including inpatient care, pre- and post-operation, outpatient care, community care. There will also be the opportunity to participate in outreach to rural facilities in the Whitsunday area (Bowen & Proserpine), and to develop and be actively involved in clinical audit, research and the quality assurance programming. You will provide educational programs for medical students in the Orthopaedics Department, including developing a preceptor program for students undergoing their clinical immersions and will generally contribute actively in the education and training of interns and junior medical staff in Orthopaedics department. You will also have the chance to provide leave relief as the Clinical Director as required.
