The opportunity

Currently there are currently 3 general surgeons – all with their own sub-specialties (1 x breast, 2 x lower gut) while the Hospital is happy to support another sub-specialty. There are also 4 orthopaedic surgeons and 1 neurologist.

You will be an energetic and collaborative general surgeon who could bring Upper GI sub-specialty interests to complement their current staff and provide day-to-day clinical management of general surgical patients at Bathurst Hospital.

As well as providing an effective specialist General Surgical service to the patients of Bathurst and the surrounding area, you will provide education, supervision and support to junior medical staff and registrars and will engage in quality assurance activities both at the Departmental and hospital level, or when an interdepartmental case review is required.

You will have substantial general surgical experience with a sub-specialty interest and expertise in Upper GI.

The Hospital

Bathurst Hospital serves a population of some 40,000 people and the specialist clinics operate five days a week with specialist services in renal, gynaecology, gerontology, rehabilitation and general surgery fully utilised.

It has recently acquired a new $560,000 CT (computer tomography) scanner, eliminating the need for stroke and heart patients to travel to Orange Hospital.

It is currently undergoing accreditation as a training facility for emergency medicine, while the obstetricians and gynaecologists have been working with the general manager to upgrade the maternity unit to level 4 and the special care nursery to Level 3. They now meet Ministry of Health standards for this upgrade which means premature babies can be treated locally rather than undergo the long trip to Sydney.  Additionally, with the appointment of an intensive care specialist the intensive care unit is being upgraded to be a fully accredited level 4 service.

Set in a wonderful natural environment with warm summers, clear, crisp winters, occasional snowfalls and lovely spring and autumn colours, Bathurst is one of the region's most beautiful cities, offering a diversity of attractions, activities and facilities.

It also has short regular flights to Sydney (50 mins, 3 times a day) or take a leisurely 2.5 hour drive.

Affordability is one of Bathurst’s key strengths. The average house price (RP Data 2014) for a 3 bedroom home is $321,000 compared with Sydney’s inner ring $831,000.

As a demographically young city with the median age being 36, Bathurst is supported by a strong educational sector.  There are over 55 institutions from the headquarters of Charles Sturt University, to 6 high schools and pre-school and family Day Care Schemes.

Historic sites and architecture, cultural facilities, the famous Mount Panorama motor racing circuit and the growing wine industry all contribute to making the city an appealing destination.
