The Hospital and Department

Rockhampton Hospital is a 305-bed facility and the main referral hospital for Central Queensland, now providing integrated cancer care services in Central Queensland in the newly established building boasting state of the art medical equipment.  The other primary hospitals within the health service are Gladstone, Emerald, Yeppoon and Biloela together with many smaller rural units transfer patients through to Rockhampton for specialist care and investigation.

The Hospital has recently gained accreditation for training in emergency medicine as well as being accredited for training in general surgery, anaesthetics, intensive care, general medicine, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology and psychiatry.

Department of Surgery: The Rockhampton Hospital has four operating theatres and two procedure rooms. The operating theatre complex is supported by a 6 bed ICU/HDU. The Department is accredited for specialist training and is heavily involved in teaching and research.
CQ Health performed 9,615 elective surgeries during 2017-2018 which equates to 8% more elective surgeries delivered to Central Queenslanders. The highly skilled theatre staff also delivered 3,828 emergency surgeries.

The Area

A tale of two cities, Rockhampton is both a city steeped in history and proud of its colonial heritage and regional service-centre roots while simultaneously being a major regional city that is vibrant, cosmopolitan and actively engaged in carving out its own future.

It is a city readily defined by its natural environment, the Fitzroy River that runs through it and the Berserker Mountain Range that surrounds it; straddling the Tropic of Capricorn it is close to the Capricorn Coast and its white sandy beaches.  It offers a diversity of lifestyle options from coastal, to rural, to vibrant city living, with the best tropical climate Queensland has to offer. In 2009, it received a Bronze Award as one of the world’s most liveable communities.

Rockhampton is one of those places that ticks all the top priority lifestyle boxes: affordable housing; quality education opportunities; high level health care and support services plus top-shelf arts and cultural amenities beautifully wrapped up in a central location. It is a sports and recreation hotspot; excellent shopping, fantastic dining destination and all with a laid back lifestyle, a sun-soaked subtropical climate within a half-an-hour of the Southern Great Barrier Reef.

From urban riverfront inner-city apartments to classic Queenslanders, a homestead on acreage or a modern family home with the full fitout of conveniences, Rockhampton’s housing market can offer something for everyone but its ability to deliver more bang for your buck is a significant selling point. Rockhampton’s housing affordability is exceptional with the median price of a home at $250,000 making it an extremely affordable city to live in or raise a family.

With open spaces and more room to move, school life is greatly enriched when students become engaged in life outside the classroom and take advantage of the full range of extra and co-curricular activities on offer. With 22 primary schools and 10 secondary schools (each both public and private), you have an excellent selection of where to send your child for their education.  CQUniversity is the largest regional university offering TAFE and University qualifications, flexible study options, practical learning experiences and pathway options.

Brisbane is just a short 1 hour flight from Rockhampton’s local airport.
