Are you a community psychiatrist keen to experience a new lifestyle in New Zealand?
We have an opportunity for a community psychiatrist to work in beautiful Taranaki – on the west coast of North Island, New Zealand. The team is an experienced and motivated team that provide specialist community care to people living rurally and in the small towns spread around the southern base of Mount Taranaki and spreading to the west coastline of the North Island.
You will join a wider team of 13 psychiatrists and will work with a dedicated team of medical, nursing and allied health staff primarily caring for people in a community setting with complex needs requiring specialist mental health services.
Whilst practising within your psychiatry set of skills, you will be exposed and taught about New-Zealand’s unique cultures, which you will incorporate into your practice.
The Mental Health and Addictions service (MHAS) hosts medical students from the University of Auckland. You will enjoy the benefits of teaching and supervising years 5 and 6, while having access to the University’s up to date resources.
You will also participate in a 1:10 on call roster.
The base hospital is located in New Plymouth and is one of two hospitals operated by the District Health Board. The base hospital is a progressive regional secondary referral hospital providing an array of Medical Specialties, Intensivist managed ICU, HDU and Radiology. As part of the recent $80 million redevelopment, the Acute Services building was opened in 2013 with six wards and six operating theatres, two endoscopy/ procedure rooms, day stay facilities, Inpatient ward space with 150 beds (60 Surgical, 60 Medical, and 30 Assessment Treatment and Rehabilitation) and a new paediatric inpatient ward. It also has video bronchoscopy facilities and a respiratory lab for spirometry and DLCO testing.
The MHAS provides a wide range of specialist services within the Taranaki region that include:
- A 23 bed inpatient unit (4 beds - IPC), an Assessment and a Brief Intervention service working in the community. High and complex needs and community supported rehabilitation service beds are accessed via Tui ora a Kaupapa Maori service.
- Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services.
- Mental Health Services for Older people.
- Alcohol and Drug Services.
The Taranaki region (colloquially known as “The Naki” by the locals) has a population of 106,000 and is known for its stunning natural landscape, which lends itself to all manner of outdoor activities from the mountains to the sea, such as surfing, windsurfing, ski-ing, mountain biking, fishing, golfing, hiking, sailing, cycling, ironman and triathlons, and has been the backdrop for numerous well-known blockbuster movies.
The temperate climate and high sunshine hours (3rd highest in NZ), combined with a welcoming and multicultural community, makes it a really dynamic and enjoyable place to live, where the housing is affordable and the schooling is excellent. Famous for its Surf Highway 45 - featuring some of the best surfing and windsurfing spots in New Zealand – the annual music and art festivals, gourmet restaurants, an established café culture, premier golfing and ski fields, means that New Plymouth as a city caters to all lifestyles and all ages.
