Senior Consultant/Staff Specialist with a love for the outback spirit required for Mount Isa, North West Queensland, working in a small hospital service that’s passionate about its local community.

The Role

You will have FRANZCP or equivalent with additional experience of working in remote and rural communities. While not mandatory, an interest in Indigenous Health and addictions will also be well-regarded. If you are an overseas trained psychiatrist it is essential that you a) completed your specialist training in either NZ, UK, Ireland, South Africa, Canada or USA b) you have remote health experience c) in your basic or advanced training you completed at least 6 month rotations in CAMS and consultation liaison psychiatry.

Mount Isa includes a significant Indigenous population (26%) and is land of the Kalkadoon People. Medical Staff who relocate here become familiar with indigenous health issues and management, as well as rural and remote practice. Aside from mental health, case management often includes multiple chronic health problems such as Rheumatic Heart Disease, Diabetes and its associated complications (heart, liver and renal disease) as well as multiple other health problems.

The Hospital

The North West Hospital and Health Service covers an area of over 300,000 square kilometres and services the rural and remote communities within North Western Queensland and the Gulf of Carpentaria. Geographically, the Health Service includes the City of Mount Isa and the towns and areas of Burketown, Camooweal, Cloncurry, Dajarra, Doomadgee, Julia Creek, Karumba, Normanton and Mornington Island.

Services include: Accident & Emergency; Aged Care; Anaesthetics; Community Health; Day Surgery; Dental Care; Dietetics; Family Planning; General Medicine; General Surgery; Intensive Care; Maternity; Medical Imaging incl CT, USS, Echo; Mental Health; Occupational Therapy; Oncology; Outpatients; Paediatrics; Palliative Care; Pathology; Pharmacy; Physiotherapy; Podiatry; Renal Unit; Sexual Health; Social Work; Speech Therapy. Multiple additional specialist services are provided on an outreach basis from Townsville, Cairns and Brisbane.

The Hospital values medical education and opportunities to be involved in research and disaster planning, and is accredited for training with the Rural Generalist Pathway for both Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) and The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP).

Mount Isa also has a Royal Flying Doctor Service base providing rural retrievals, transfers and numerous primary health care activities including clinics at the health centres mentioned above.

The Location
Mount Isa has a population of approx. 34,000 and is located approximately 1833 kilometres northwest of Brisbane and 900 kilometres from Townsville. Regular daily flights exist between Mount Isa and major centres. The age structure of the district is predominantly young; and the region supports greater than 50 nationalities. The economic basis for the community consists of mining, cattle, fishing and tourism, and the subsequent support structures of these industries.

The rugged countryside offers ample opportunity for day and weekend trips, no matter whether you are a camper, interested in 4x4, canoeing, luxury hotels or motel accommodation. Jump in the four wheel drive and explore the outback, do a bit of fishing, or camp out under the stars.
