We’re seeking an experienced Clinical Director and Consultant Radiologist to lead the Radiology Department at Whangarei Hospital in subtropical Northland.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone with Clinical Director/ leadership experience, looking to make a change and take on a fresh professional challenge, and lead this busy vital service.  

The Clinical Director component of the role is initially for a two year period, whilst the Consultant Radiologist role is permanent.

The Hospital & Service

Northland District Health Board provides a comprehensive range of diagnostic imaging services for the Northland population. Over 100,000 procedures are undertaken annually by the service and a wide range of services and modalities are performed including X-Ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound, mammography, fluoroscopy and basic interventional procedures. 

The radiology department at Whangarei Hospital has modern imaging equipment with two CT scanners (256 slice and 16 Slice) and a 1.5T MRI. 

The Consultant Radiologists are generalists with a breadth of skills but they are also supported in developing their special interest/s. Lifelong learning and continued professional development are also very much supported. Multidisciplinary meetings are held each week with all specialities being involved, which encourages a close collegial working environment. 

For this role

You will be committed to clinical leadership and to working in partnership with the General Manager, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Medical Officer and other stakeholders to develop a high quality radiology service across the region.  A strong interest in clinical governance, quality improvement and medical education are, therefore, essential.

In addition to your leadership and management skills and experience, you will have recent broad specialist experience in Radiology, and be comfortable working in a range of modalities.

You will have a sound understanding of contemporary models of care; experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment; as well as an interest in teaching including registrars, medical students as well as other members of the team.

You will also enjoy working in a multicultural workforce, and being based in a friendly coastal community.

The Location

Northland covers an area of 12,600 square kilometres and a population of 180,000, spanning from just north of Auckland right up to Cape Reinga at the very top of the North Island. Whangarei is the main urban centre and where this roles is based.

With its high sunshine hours and fantastic natural environment, including white sandy beaches and native forests, Northland has the reputation of being one of the country’s premier tourist and lifestyle destinations, and is a popular holiday choice for both New Zealanders and international visitors.

It’s a region rich in Māori and European history, some of the oldest traces of Māori settlement can be found here. Today, 35% of the Northland population identify as Māori, so newcomers will experience a real connection with the culture and way of life here, which provides valuable exposure and rewarding experiences both professionally and socially. 

Popular water recreation areas include the Bay of Islands and Poor Knights Islands Reserves for world class scuba diving, sailing and fishing. You can also enjoy al fresco dining, paddle boarding, golfing, hiking and mountain biking and so much more.

Whangarei has easy access transport links to Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, which is only a two hour drive away. There is also a busy domestic airport, with numerous daily flights to Auckland (35 minutes) that connect to Auckland International Airport.

What’s on offer?

  • Total package ranges NZ$190,000 - $320,000 per annum, depending on experience
  • This includes: Base salary from NZ$161,304 to $240,000 pa (approx £82,000 to £122,000 pa), depending on level of experience; On call calculated on top of your base; Continuing Medical Education Allowance NZ$16,000 + 10 days CME leave pa; and the Clinical Director allowance
  • Plus relocation assistance

Requirements for this role

Ideally, you will hold FRANZCR and full Vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).

Alternatively, if not NZ-trained, you will hold equivalent specialist qualifications from either the UK (via CCT), Australia (FRANZCR), Canada (FRCPSC)(DR), South Africa (FC Rad Diag(SA)) or the USA (American Board Certified) that will enable specialist registration with Medical Council of New Zealand via the Provisional Vocational registration (long term) pathway or Locum Tenens (short term, up to 12 months) registration pathway.

These are the two specialist pathways for Radiologists in NZ and we can assist with medical registration and the work visa, if successfully appointed
