Te Whatu Ora - Health New Zealand, Hauora a Toi Bay of Plenty is spread across a vast geographical area and centred across two hospitals based in Tauranga and Whakatāne.  We serve a population of approximately 308,000 for the major population centres of Tauranga, Katikati, Te Puke, Whakatāne, Kawerau and Ōpōtiki.  Te Whatu Ora Hauora a Toi Bay of Plenty is one of the Bay of Plenty’s largest employers with over 4000 staff.

About the Role

Te Whatu Ora Hauora a Toi Bay of Plenty is seeking an experienced Psychiatrist to join the Bay of Plenty Mental Health and Addiction Services as the Clinical Director.  This role will be providing clinical leadership across both Tauranga and Whakatāne sites in the Bay of Plenty.

The Bay of Plenty Mental Health and Addiction Services consists of a 24-bed mental health inpatient unit in Tauranga, and a 10-bed inpatient unit in Whakatāne, Community Mental Health Services in Tauranga and Whakatāne for all ages, as well as Consultation and Liaison Services, Maternal Mental Health, Addictions and OST Services in both areas. 

We are looking for someone who has skills and passion to lead us through the outcome of the National Mental Health review to continue to provide excellent mental health services to a rapidly growing population.

The role is an amalgamation of both leadership 0.6 FTE and clinical practicing 0.4 FTE. Flexibility between the two would be expected and will be well supported by your peers.

  • General adult inpatient and outpatient services, Psychogeriatrics, Consult Liaison, Child and Adolescent, Drug and Alcohol and Maternal Mental Health services.
  • We are a teaching hospital with Psychiatric Registrars training through the Upper Central North Island (UCNI) training scheme and 5th and 6th year medical students through the University of Auckland.
  • Opportunities for research and teaching roles through our clinical campus and close links with Auckland University.

About You

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A passion for working with those suffering mental health challenges and addictions, and someone who enjoys teaching and training others in this area.
  • Vocationally Registered Psychiatrist with the Medical Council of NZ or be eligible for this.
  • A fellowship with the RANZCP or the equivalent is essential.
  • Significant clinical leadership experience with proven Psychiatry practice and competence 
  • The ability to demonstrate and implement your knowledge of clinical governance practices and processes within our health care services
  • Proven ability to be able to skilfully negotiate, communicate, and work with harmony and empathy within various sectors including the community, other health professionals, families and carers.

Due to the nature of this leadership role, time limited tenure reviews will be required, initially within the first 12 months.
