Words of Wisdom – Advice from doctors who made the move overseas
Our Head of International GP Recruitment, Vicki McLaren, recently took a trip to Australia to meet with clients and also to catch up with some of the doctors we have previously helped find amazing jobs there.
Relocating overseas to take up a new role is a big decision. There's a lot involved, from visa applications and medical registration to living arrangements and learning about new healthcare systems. Fortunately, here at Head Medical we have a dedicated team of Registration Consultants on hand to help guide you through the process every step of the way – from initial application right through to getting off the plane in your chosen destination (and beyond!).
Here are some words of wisdom from some of our previously placed doctors:
"The best decision I ever made. Practice operations are similar to the UK once you have learned to navigate the different healthcare system. I have more freedom in my work and clinical practice. The process was made easier by excellent communication and the approachable staff at Head Medical."
"Speak to several practice owners and don't rush into a decision. The process is easier than I expected but quite slow! Head Medical were very helpful."
"Just go for it! What do you have to lose? My days are flexible – I can choose my daily hours and charge these as I decide, and no longer feel as stressed or overworked. The process was easy and the team at Head Medical were 100% supportive."
"I thought for a long time about moving to Australia, but now I realise I shouldn't have thought so hard! It is just like I imagined it would be. Head Medical were very friendly and helpful – it was much better having them prepare the paperwork for me and they were always around to answer any questions I had about the process."
"Do your research well, speak to people who have made the move previously and look for online groups to find out more about living and working as a GP in Australia. The paperwork process went smoothly – Head Medical kept the process moving along and were very approachable and friendly."
"Ensure the practice you decide on is busy as your salary is dependent on the amount of patients you see. If you have children check out the local schools and the steps needed to secure places. Make sure you get your ABN number and start your APHRA registration the day you arrive – it can take a little while to process. Head Medical were brilliant and guided me through step by step."
