Things to do around Brisbane & the Gold Coast: Part One
In the first installment of a two-part series, Nic Ruecroft (our own resident Australian) highlights some interesting things to see and do in and around the beautiful areas of Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
The Global Food Village opens every Sunday in Brisbane, where you can experience more than 185 nationalities of food from across Europe, Africa and Asia.
Or explore the history of Brisbane’s settlement in the O’Donovan Library, Brisbane’s oldest library established with the inception of the Queensland government in 1860.
Underwood Park has a fantastic play area for the young (and young of heart) including cubby houses and a bike monorail! The park also had picnic shelters, barbeques and beautiful wetlands with a boardwalk circuit.
Coochiemundlo Island is a short ferry ride away. You can swim on any of the three sandy beaches, or hire a boat and explore the surrounding seas. Bike hire is also available, and the small island is easily accessible on two wheels. You can use the provided picnic areas, or have a meal at the restaurant.
The Sunnybank Plaza Asian Food Discovery Tour with the chef Tony Ching who shows you the best places to eat and shop for fresh Asian food. He gives tips on what and where to buy ingredients, and also how best to prepare it.
O’Reilly’s Tree Top Walk sits on the edge of the Lamington National Park, the walk lets you get up among the canopy 15m above the ground. There are also several ground-level bushwalks which will allow you to explore the forest. There is even accommodation on site so you can stay in the rainforest.
There are four Public Art walking tours around the city which allow you to discover public art, architecture and cultural heritage. Visit the Brisbane Council’s website to download the guides and take a stroll around the city.
For an alternative to the beach, there are beautiful natural rock pools in Cedar Creek which is a 45 minute drive north west of Brisbane and located beneath Mt Glorious.
