My favourite place in...Australia

More

MelbourneMy favourite place in Australia has to be Melbourne; the city and its suburbs have it all. Constantly voted one of the best places to stay in the world, the capital of Victoria offers a great mix of art galleries, museums, bars, restaurants and shops.

Like most great cities it has a river running through it and on the banks of the Yarra there are fabulous restaurants, cafés and the massive Crown Casino complex (just don’t attempt to get in with flip flops…I’ve tried).

The city has a bit of a sporty feel, with lots of people jogging in and around the many parks and green spaces. There are some great sporting events like the Melbourne Grand Prix (where I was lucky enough to work), the Australian Open Tennis Championships and not forgetting the Melbourne Cup horseraces where you can get your glad rags on and have a punt or just marvel at some of the weird and wonderful hats on display. I would also recommend a day at the MCG to watch the cricket – even if you are not a massive cricket buff, it’s a great experience.

Transport wise the trams are an excellent way to get about, you might even be lucky enough to get one of the humorous drivers who tend to use the PA system for jokes rather than the important/boring stuff. I have had some of my funniest commutes there – I was once on a packed tram where the conductor had decked his tram out in tinsel and baubles and serenaded us with jingle bells for the whole journey.

Lastly, I couldn’t talk about Melbourne without mentioning St Kilda. It’s a lively suburb 15 mins outside the city where you can hit the beach and work on your tan, head down Acland street for a cake and watch the beautiful people stroll by or hit Chapel street for some retail therapy and a cool drink.

The next time I visit Oz Melbourne will definitely be my first port of call.
