The Orthopaedic Department is a 40-bed combined surgical ward, with 4 Orthopaedic Surgeons (in addition to this vacancy) and 1 visiting medical officer. There are 6 principal house officers and 5 junior medical officers. The Department enjoys a close working relationship with colleagues in two local private hospitals.

You will have significant experience and skills within Orthopaedics; proven leadership skills and experience working in a multidisciplinary team environment; an interest in medical education and teaching, and in providing supervision and education to surgical trainees, medical students and other clinical staff, and take a proactive approach to maintaining your own professional development; as well as have a commitment to quality improvements and a willingness to be involved in continuous quality improvement programmes.

Ideally you will hold FRACS, (or equivalent and are progressing towards Fellowship with Royal Australasian College of Emergency Medicine already), or you are simply at the early stages of exploring your options in Australia and have considerable experience as a specialist orthopaedic surgeon - whatever your circumstances, we would like to hear from you.

Please note that depending on your personal background and experience, you may be required to fulfil English language requirements (IELTS or OET).

The Hospital

The 227-bed Hospital provides services to a local population of 65,000 (regional catchment area is approx. 225,000) and also supports smaller satellite hospitals within its catchment area. It is the main hospital for the region. Specialist Medical Services offered include: Orthopaedics, Emergency Medicine, General Medicine, Cardiology, Renal Medicine, Palliative Care, Psychiatry, Rehabilitation, Geriatric Medicine, Paediatrics, General Surgery, Urology, ENT, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Intensive Care and Anaesthetics. There are also a range of clinical services provided on a visiting basis from tertiary hospitals in Queensland.

The Hospital provides training for Medical Students participating in University of Queensland – Central Queensland Rural Clinical School, and has links with the Central Queensland University for Nursing and Health Studies.

The Location

Rockhampton is known as the “beef capital of Australia” – a nod to the cattle industry, which plays an important part in the local and national economy. The town’s colonial history can be seen in its palm tree-lined streets and grand old heritage buildings, which hark back to its Gold Rush days – some of which have been lovingly restored to give the city a real ‘aussie’ charm, creating a real sense of community.

The region offers a superb lifestyle and a healthy family environment with a range of cultural, recreational and sporting activities. Real estate prices are affordable with a choice of town, coast or country living. Stroll along the river, drive out to the coast exploring the many beaches, discover Carnarvon National Park, or spend time enjoying the galleries and botanic gardens - the lifestyle is peaceful and serene here. You will have access to water sports, the best steak Queensland has to offer, and of course, the Great Barrier Reef for some fabulous deep sea diving.

Brisbane is just a short 1 hour flight from Rockhampton’s local airport.

What Head Medical can do for you
Arranging a position overseas is very exciting, but we understand that it can also be daunting and time consuming. We’re the UK's specialist in international medical recruitment and we‘ve helped many Doctors relocate since we first started out in 2008 (you can read what people have said about working with us on our testimonials page). We know it’s important to balance career opportunities with lifestyle and we’ll talk through your plans and will get to know you to make sure we find the right role in the right location.

Once we have secured a job for you, we’ll manage the Medical Registration and Visa application process, and support you (and your family) with the relocation itself.
