The Location

Situated in the largest region in WA, Goldfields covers almost a third of Western Australia and has a population of 54,000. As the name suggests, the area is rich in mining history. Most of the population are decedents of the original minors or people who have come to the area for the gold and nickel, and stayed for life.

The region played a significant role in the development of Western Australia as the centre of the 1890s gold rush. There are lots of reminders of this in the area which add to the list of things to see and do. As a result of the influx of settlers to the area, it has developed a strong European heritage mixed with Indigenous cultures create a unique character.

  • Average highest temperature is 37 degrees in the summer and lowest of 6 degrees in the winter.

Living in a country town may appeal to those after the bright lights, noise and busyness of the big cities, but there is still plenty to offer!

Town life centres around the community with plenty of entertainment whether year round or passing through. Festivals, race days, sporting events and much more. Even the smallest of rural communities offer plenty of outdoor sporting activities.

The Aussie pub is the centre of rural life, no matter how small a town, there will always be a pub or sports club which play a major part in community life and introducing new people to a new way of life.

Plenty of natural beauty in the area including eucalyptus forests, wide sweeping plains and an abundance of wildlife.

The area has around 22 practices including Aboriginal Medical Services and the Royal Flying Doctors. There is a local hospital and access to specialists in Kalgoorlie.

Why Go Rural?

Rural communities in Australia are not necessarily cut off from the world. You will still find plenty of shops, entertainment, good schools and lots of outdoor activities wherever you go.

There are a number of incentives to work in rural Australia. Just a few examples:

  • If you choose to work in a solo practice, you can take pride in knowing that because of you, the people in the area are being taken care of. They might be travelling 80km to see you and you will know you are giving people something that without you, they would not have.
  • The competition in “rural” Australia can be far different to that of the cities. Where in some locations you may have 20 GPs competing for 5,000 people, working in rural commutes, you may be 1 of 3 GPs looking after 5,000 people.
  • Earning potential varies dramatically depending what the GP wants to take on. Some locations, GPs can earn as much as $400,000 in their first year! There are also local and national grants available on top of your earnings.
  • In some places there may be less schools, but it can mean class sizes can be smaller so pupils have less competition in the teachers attention and pupils are more likely to be learning with their neighbours and friends.
  • Less traffic. As with anywhere, the more people, the more cars tend to be on the roads. Working outwith a major city can bring great benefits in terms of getting around, finding a parking space and road safety.

What Head Medical can do for you

Arranging a position overseas is very exciting, but we understand that it can also be daunting and time consuming. We’re the UK’s specialist in international medical recruitment and we’ve helped many Doctors relocate since we first started out in 2008 (you can read what people have said about working with us on our testimonials page). We know it’s important to balance career opportunities with lifestyle and we’ll talk through your plans and will get to know you to make sure we find the right role in the right location.

Once we have secured a job for you, we’ll manage the Medical Registration and Visa application process, and support you (and your family) with the relocation itself.
