New Zealand is frequently recognised as a country which has one of the highest qualities of life in the world and New Zealand cities consistently dominate worldwide quality of living standards surveys, making them attractive destinations for migrants. Every three years New Zealand’s 12 largest city councils are rated for their quality of life, in a quality of life report. The 2007 report by the Metropolitan Sector Group showed the majority of residents in the cities (90%) felt they had a positive overall quality of life. They enjoyed clean air and water and had ready access to employment, housing and services such as health and education. The economy was strong, median personal and household incomes had increased, there had been an increase in jobs and a drop in unemployment. The 12 cities accounted for nearly two-thirds of all economic activity in New Zealand.

Healthcare is mainly provided within the public sector in New Zealand, although there are also some opportunities for private practice. There are nineteen District Health Boards providing public health care throughout the country and Head Medical has good working relationships with all of these organisations. Hospitals range from large metropolitan teaching hospitals to small country general hospitals.
