Moving to New Zealand – from a Doctors Perspective

The hospitalist features a range of compelling articles each month, some of these stories includes articles:

  • Practical, evidence-based clinical reviews of areas most important to hospitalists
  • Quality improvement initiatives and developments
  • Updates in academic hospital medicine
  • Coverage of domestic and international hospital medicine developments
  • Profiles and interviews with hospital medicine leaders
  • Medico-legal issues facing hospitalists
  • Operational strategies for hospital medicine leaders

Dr M-A Williams is a team member at the hospitalist. He has been a practicing hospitalist in Denver since 1999. He worked with the same company for 11 years until relocating for New Zealand. Dr Williams has written an article in the Hospitalist about his experience and views on relocating New Zealand and the healthcare system there.

Dr M A Williams decided that he would take a work sabbatical for a year to see how the other side of the world operates and lives  deciding to take this in stunning New Zealand. The move would give the Hospitalist a insight in to the differing in delivering health care.

So in July 2010 Dr William’s and his family relocated to Ohope Beach on the North East Coast of New Zealand. The article was written six months in to the sabbatical. It appears the sabbatical has been an real eye opener for Dr Williams, showing differences between New Zealand and US, for example some of these being:

  • New Zealand spends less money the on healthcare
  • New Zealand medication costs a third of what it does in the US
  • NZ undergo less testing
  • NZ spend less time in ICU, yet they live longer
  • The public sector pays for Health Insurance of every single New Zealand Resident
